When a VPN is worth turning on
Times it helps
Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and cafes is shared with strangers, and the people running it can watch what passes through. With SoVPN on, the link from your device to our server is encrypted, so the network only sees that you are connected to SoVPN. Your internet provider at home sees the same.
It also helps when you are abroad and need services from home, or whenever you would prefer sites to see a server's IP instead of yours.
What a VPN does not do
When you log in to a site, that site knows it is you, whatever IP it sees. A VPN also cannot remove malware you installed yourself. Keep your system updated and be careful with downloads.
Some countries restrict or ban VPN use. Check the local rules before you connect there. Using a VPN does not make an illegal activity legal.
Common questions
Should I use a VPN at home too?
It depends on what you care about. At home, your internet provider can see which sites you visit, and a VPN hides that. If that does not bother you, it is enough to turn it on for public Wi-Fi or for reaching home services from abroad.
Is online banking safe without a VPN?
Bank sites already protect the page with HTTPS. On public Wi-Fi, a VPN adds one more layer and keeps the network owner from seeing which sites you open. If your banking app rejects VPN connections, exclude it with split tunneling.
Will streaming services from other countries work?
We cannot guarantee it. Some services block VPN servers, and their rules change often. Connect to a server in the country you want, and if it does not work, try another server in the same country.
Can I keep the VPN on all day?
Yes. There are no data or speed limits, so you can leave SoVPN connected. If one app has trouble on the VPN, exclude it with split tunneling instead of turning the VPN off.
