Menu bar icon and main window
The menu bar icon shows your connection state and a short list of servers you used recently. The main window has the full list, the protocol setting (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2), the kill switch and split tunneling.
Plus and Pro add ad and tracker blocking, malicious site blocking and Double VPN. Blocking runs on SoVPN's DNS, so it applies to Safari, Chrome and every other browser with no extension to install.
Settings we suggest
If your MacBook goes from home to the office to a cafe, keep the kill switch on. Each network change leaves a gap of a few seconds, and the kill switch closes it. WireGuard reconnects quickly when you open the lid again.
Put AirPlay speakers and TVs, home file shares, and work apps that check your office IP into split tunneling. Anything you do not list still goes through the VPN.
Fixing common problems
If clicking Connect does nothing, the VPN configuration was most likely never allowed. Open System Settings, go to Network or VPN, remove the SoVPN entry, and log in to the app again. macOS will show the permission prompt again.
Antivirus software and VPNs you used before often leave network filters behind. If sites only fail while SoVPN is on, check the network extensions list in System Settings and turn off ones you no longer need.
