Requirements · A router with a built-in WireGuard client, such as OpenWrt, recent ASUS firmware or GL.iNet.
From install to connected
- 1Buy a VPN plan with your SoVPN balance.
- 2In Downloads, find Router and click Get WireGuard file.
- 3From a computer on the same network, open the router's admin page and log in to the router.
- 4Open the WireGuard client (sometimes called VPN client) and import the file or paste its contents.
- 5Save and turn the connection on.
- 6On a device behind the router, open an IP lookup site and check that it shows the server's country.
When a router setup makes sense
Game consoles, smart TVs and set-top boxes cannot install a VPN app. Connected to a VPN router, they are covered too, and you do not have to set up each device.
The catch is that one file is tied to one server. Moving to another location means loading a new file. If you change countries often, use the apps on your phone and computer and leave the router on one location.
Settings we suggest
Many routers can send only certain devices through the VPN. OpenWrt calls it policy routing, ASUS usually calls it VPN Director, and GL.iNet has it in the VPN client options. Use it to keep a work laptop or a console on your regular connection.
Keep the DNS address that comes in the file so lookups go to SoVPN as well. If parental controls or DNS rebind protection are on, check that they do not overwrite that address.
Fixing common problems
On a router, VPN speed depends on the router's processor. An old or cheap model can get much slower with the VPN on, even on a fast internet line.
Router says connected, but devices cannot open sites? Check the router's clock and firmware. WireGuard needs the correct time, and some older firmware reads config files in its own way.
