Packing SoVPN for a trip

On a trip you join one unknown network after another: the airport, the train, the hotel. SoVPN encrypts what your phone and laptop send over them. If a service at home won't work from abroad, connect to a server in your home country.

Before you leave

Install the apps at home, where the connection is fast and stable. Once they are ready, they will be in the Downloads tab for accounts with an active VPN plan.

Log in on every device you're bringing and connect once to make sure it works. Basic covers 6 devices at once, so your phone, tablet and laptop can all stay connected.

  • Buy a VPN plan, then open Downloads in your dashboard
  • Install the app on each device and paste your account token to log in
  • Turn on Settings > Connection > Kill switch

VPN rules at your destination

A few countries limit or ban VPNs. Read the rules for where you're going and follow them.

On networks that filter VPN traffic, OpenVPN TCP sometimes gets through when the other protocols don't. We can't promise a connection on every network.

Hotel and airport Wi-Fi

These networks often have no password, or a password printed on a card for every guest. Connect to SoVPN the moment you're online, so your apps are encrypted from the first request.

Many of them open a login or terms page first. Get through it with SoVPN off, then connect. If SoVPN still won't connect, switch the protocol to OpenVPN TCP.

Services from home

Banking apps, government portals and some local shops block foreign IPs or ask for extra checks. A server in your home country makes you look like you're logging in from home.

If a service checks your device closely, use the same server every time. Pro includes a dedicated IP in one of 10 countries, so your address stays the same from trip to trip.

Common questions

Can I install SoVPN after I've left?

Yes. With an active VPN plan, the Downloads tab works from anywhere. It's still easier to install before you go.

My bank app locks me out abroad. What can I do?

Connect to a server in your home country. If the bank still blocks you, a Pro plan gives you a dedicated IP that doesn't change.

Is it legal to use a VPN everywhere?

No. Some countries restrict VPNs. Look up the local law before your trip.
